This collection includes correspondence, clippings, photographs, sermons, biographical and historical narratives, brochures, newsletters, certificates, invitations, church service leaflets, a poster, architectural drawings and specifications, and other related papers that document the history of the Franklyn I. A. Bennett family of Washington, D.C., the ministry of The Rev. Franklyn I. A. Bennett, and the history of Calvary Episcopal Church, Washington, D.C. This collection ranges in date from 1898 to 2001, with the bulk of the material spanning the time period between the early 1900's through 1951. Papers in this collection were generated by various members of the Bennett family, but most were created by The Rev. Franklyn I. A. Bennett in connection with his service as Priest-in-Charge of Calvary Episcopal Church. A smaller portion of this collection was compiled by Alphonso Williamson in connection with his work with the church.

The Rev. Franklyn Isaac Abraham Bennett was born on May 14, 1873 in New Orleans, Louisiana. When he was two years old, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina where he was educated in private schools beginning at the age of six. He graduated from Avery Academy in 1891 and left Charleston in 1892 to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C.. In 1895 he began his study of theology at King Hall, an Episcopal theological college connected with Howard University, graduating in 1897. ...
